وفقا لاتفاقية التطبيع المصري وضمان حرية الملاحة في البحر الأحمر للجانب الإسرائيلي، فإن جزيرتي تيران وصنافير تقع ضمن المنطقة (ج) التي تحظر وجود أي قوّة عسكرية، إنما يوجد فقط قوّات شرطة مدنية مصرية.
تقوم الدوريات البحرية التابعة للقوة متعددة الجنسيات، التي تشرف على نزع السلاح في سيناء، بدوريات في جزيرتي تيران والمصرية من وقت لآخر.
في الماضي، أغلقت مصر مضيق تيران مما أدى لاشتعال حرب عام 1967 والعدوان الثلاثي عام 1956.
